Learning Objectives:


- Identify objects that float or sink in water
- Demonstrate understanding by sorting items into float/sink groups
- Explore how different materials behave in water


Materials Needed:


- Clear water bins (1 per group of 4 children)
- Collection of safe floating/sinking items
- Picture cards showing floating/sinking objects
- Apples (1 per child)
- Colored paper for sails
- Popsicle sticks
- Small handheld fans
- Kitchen sponges (1 per child)
- Triangular transparent plastic pieces
- Colored cellophane paper
- Glue and double-sided tape
- Safety scissors (teacher use only)
- Paper towels
- Waterproof aprons


Lesson Procedure


3 mins - Welcome Time
• Sing "Hello Song"
• Show a boat floating: "Look! It's moving!"
• Basic water safety reminders

5 mins - Discovery Chat
• Show pictures of boats in water
• Simple demonstration with floating items
• Introduce vocabulary: float, sink, water, boat, sail, move
• Use gestures and actions to demonstrate concepts

7 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Float or Sink Game
• Show large objects one at a time
• Children predict: "Will it float?"
• Test predictions in large clear container
• Celebrate correct predictions
• Use simple phrases: "It floats!" "It sinks!"

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Apple Boats
• Part 1 (5 mins):
  - Show apple boat example
  - Help children attach paper sails to popsicle sticks
  - Insert sail into apple
• Part 2 (5 mins):
  - Test apple boats in water
  - Use fans to make boats move
  - Observe how sails help movement
  - Use phrases: "Wind pushes!" "Boat moves!"

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Sponge Boats
• Part 1 (5 mins):
  - Show completed sponge boat
  - Help children decorate sails with cellophane
  - Support gluing activities
• Part 2 (5 mins):
  - Teachers insert popsicle sticks into sponges
  - Children test boats in water
  - Compare movement with apple boats
  - Use phrases: "My boat floats!" "Look at my boat!"

5 mins - Clean-Up and Wrap-Up
• Dry hands and boats
• Review: "Boats float and move!"
• Sing "Goodbye Song"
