Materials Needed:

• Hand sanitizer
• Glitter
• Bowl of water
• Black pepper
• Liquid hand soap
• Paper towels
• Clean-up supplies


Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing the "Hello Song"

• Introduce today's topic: "Today we'll learn about germs!"

 

7 mins - Discovery Chat

• Show pictures of germs under microscope

• Ask children: "Where do germs live?"

• Discuss: "How do germs make us sick?"

• Teach vocabulary: germs, clean, dirty, soap, wash

 

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: The Glitter Germ Game

1. Discuss how germs are spread

2. Place a drop of hand sanitizer in hands and rub together

3. Dip slightly damp hands into a plate full of glitter

4. Explain to children that the glitter represents germs on our hands

5. Shake hands with 2-3 children and ask them to shake hands with their friends

6. Ask: "What happens? What do you notice?"

7. Touch different objects in the classroom with glitter-covered hands

8. Ask children to observe what happens

9. Let children try the activity

10. Discuss why washing hands is important and how it removes germs

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Shoo, Germs, Shoo!

1. Fill a shallow bowl with water and sprinkle black pepper on top (thin layer)

2. Explain that pepper represents germs: "The pepper on the water is like germs on our hands. What do you see?"

3. Ask children to predict what will happen when putting a finger in the bowl

4. Demonstrate: put clean finger in water and observe

5. Explain: "See? The germs stay there, just like when we don't use soap"

6. Ask children to predict what happens with soapy hands

7. Put soapy finger in water and watch pepper scatter

8. Discuss:

   • "Why should we wash our hands?"

   • "What does this show us about soap and germs?"

 

3 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Hand Washing Practice

• Show proper hand washing steps:

  - Wet hands

  - Apply soap

  - Scrub (count to 20)

  - Rinse

  - Dry

• Practice together

• Sing hand washing song

• Check each other's technique

3. Scrub for 20 seconds

4. Rinse with clean water

5. Dry with clean towel
