Lesson Plan: Lesson 14 – Bee: Sip and Soar
Age Group: K1 and K2 (3 to 5 years old)
Class Size: 10 children
Duration: 60 minutes
Focus Area: Controlled “bee flight” with soft breath-buzz; precise landing and stillness on a flower; tidy wing shapes away from the face
Learning Objectives
- Children will be able to mime sipping with a small, delicate motion.
- Children will be able to fly back on a clear pathway to an imagined hive.
- Children will be able to stop in a neat end statue at the hive.
Materials Needed
- Floor markers: flower landing spots and a clearly marked “hive” zone on a wall or floor
- Visual aids: flower icon, hive icon, small “sip” cue (tiny straw/tongue symbol), quiet wing shape
- Soft instrumental music for movement and freeze cues
- Chime or soft drum for start/stop
- Optional: pathway arrows or dots to guide the return flight
Procedures
5 min Warm-up: Body + Breath
Purpose: To settle the group, awaken body awareness, and prepare soft breath-buzz control.
- Gentle stretches: reach tall, open arms to a soft wing curve, roll shoulders, bend knees and float up.
- Belly breathing: hands on belly; inhale through nose, exhale with a very soft “zz” or “mmm-zz” through closed lips/teeth. Keep sound quiet.
- Face and neck safety: tuck chin slightly long, relax jaw; no tight necks.
15 min Technique Focus 1: Tiny Sip Action for Nectar
Purpose: To show delicate sipping with clear, small beats and still body support.
- - Landing setup: each child stands at a flower marker in a light “hover” shape (arms curved as wings, away from face).
- - Sip posture:
- - Feet still, knees soft, body tall.
- - One hand becomes the “flower” held near chest; the other hand shapes a tiny “proboscis straw” in front of lips.
- - Sip sequence (model with counts):
- 1. Hover still (hold 2) — sound off.
- 2. Lower head slightly and bring “straw” to the flower (1).
- 3. Tiny sip: small inhale through nose; micro head dip (2).
- 4. Pause still (1) — show “tasting” eyes.
- 5. Repeat 2–3 gentle sips, each on a 1–2 count.
- - Clarity rules:
- - Movements are tiny and controlled; no big slurps, no talking.
- - Wings stay quiet and tidy at sides or lightly open—do not touch the face.
- - Precision game:
- - Teacher calls “Sip… pause… sip… pause.” Children match the exact timing with small, identical motions.
15 min Technique Focus 2: Smooth Depart and Pathway Back to Hive
Purpose: To leave the flower calmly, keep speed steady, and arrive clearly at the hive.
- Depart sequence (model with counts):
- 1. After final sip: fold wings tidy (1), eyes to pathway (1).
- 2. Lift to a gentle hover (2) — silent.
- 3. Start smooth flight on pathway dots/arrows (counts 1–8) with even steps.
- Pathway cues:
- Eyes lead the travel; torso steady; wings curved away from face.
- Keep a constant “quiet buzz” only if teacher cues—otherwise fly silently.
- Hive arrival and end statue:
- Approach hive marker; slow to hover (hold 2).
- Land softly: heels down, knees soft (2).
- End statue options (choose one and keep consistent):
- Hands together under chin (calm bee), or
- Wings folded behind back, or
- Hands resting on tummy.
- Face calm, eyes to hive; hold still for 2–3 counts.
- Safety and spacing:
- One bee per pathway at a time; others wait at flowers.
- Arms travel forward and low; keep distance from faces and friend
10 min Guided Application to Exam Task (Bee Micro-Story)
Purpose: To combine sip, smooth depart, pathway flight, and hive statue in order.
- Model the full micro-story with counts:
- 1. Land at flower → hover still (2).
- 2. Sip–pause–sip–pause (two or three times, 1–2 each).
- 3. Fold wings (1) → eyes to path (1) → lift hover (2).
- 4. Smooth flight along pathway (1–8).
- 5. Hover at hive (2) → land (2) → neat end statue (hold 3).
- Group practice:
- Run two lanes: Flower A → Hive A; Flower B → Hive B.
- Chime cues: “Sip,” “Depart,” “Hive statue.”
10 min Performance + Feedback
Purpose: To build confidence and reinforce clarity and control.
- - Invite one child at a time to perform the micro-story.
- - Observe:
- - Tiny, delicate sips with still body.
- - Smooth, even-speed depart and pathway travel.
- - Clear landing and neat, still end statue at the hive.
- - Feedback phrases:
- - “Your sips were tiny and clear—I could see each one.”
- - “Lovely smooth pathway—no rushing.”
- - “Great quiet landing and very neat hive statue.”
- - Encourage a calm start and finish posture for each performer.
5 min Calm Close
Purpose: To help children wind down and finish proud and quiet.
- - “Bee rest”: sit or stand tall; inhale through nose; exhale silently while arms float down.
- - Shoulder hug: cross arms, gentle squeeze, release; two quiet breaths.
- - Thank children and preview next lesson.
Extension Ideas
- Sip-count patterns: 1 sip, pause; 2 sips, pause; 3 sips, pause—match teacher counts.
- Path variations: straight, soft curve, and gentle zig-zag; same slow speed.
- Statue choices: practice holding each hive statue for 3 calm counts.
