LCM Drama L8

Lesson Plan: Lesson 8 – Rabbit: Tugs and Tastes

Age Group: K1 and K2 (3 to 5 years old)
Class Size: 10 children
Duration: 60 minutes
Focus Area: Mime effort, expressive eating, and happy finish control

Learning Objectives:

  • Children will be able to mime tugging and lifting a carrot with visible effort.

  • Children will be able to show big chewing and tummy rub without rushing.

  • Children will be able to end with a happy statue for two silent counts.

Materials Needed:

  • Floor markers for performance spots

  • Visual aids for carrot shapes and eating gestures

  • Soft instrumental music for movement and freeze cues

  • Suggested props for mime inspiration: pretend carrots, pretend lettuce, pretend cake, pretend apple

Procedures:

5 min Warm-up: Body + Breath

Purpose: To settle the group, awaken body awareness, and prepare breath for silent movement.

  • Lead gentle stretches: reach arms up, roll shoulders, bend knees. Use imagery like “stretch like a tall carrot” or “roll like a rabbit waking up.”

  • Guide belly breathing: place hands on belly, breathe in slowly through nose, exhale gently through mouth.

  • Invite children to make soft “munching” sounds to connect breath with movement.

15 min Technique Focus 1: Tug-and-Lift Mime of a Carrot

Purpose: To help children mime effort clearly through body tension and timing.

  • Demonstrate tugging a pretend carrot from the ground: squat low, grip with both hands, pull with effort.

  • Show how to build tension: tighten arms, lean back slightly, add a small bounce before the lift.

  • Invite children to practice the tug-and-lift mime slowly, emphasizing effort and control.

  • Reinforce clarity: slow movement, strong shape, and visible struggle before success.

  • Practice the full sequence: squat, tug, bounce, lift, hold the carrot high.

15 min Technique Focus 2: Expressive Eating with Happy Finish

Purpose: To help children mime chewing and show satisfaction through gesture and facial expression.

  • Demonstrate big chewing: open mouth wide, slow bites, exaggerated jaw movement.

  • Show how to rub the tummy gently after eating to express enjoyment.

  • Invite children to mime eating a pretend item (e.g., carrot, cake, apple) with slow, clear chewing.

  • Guide children to finish with a happy statue: smile, hands still, body calm, hold for two silent counts.

  • Reinforce pacing: no rushing, each action has a beginning, middle, and end.

10 min Guided Application to Exam Task (Full Mime Sequence)

Purpose: To apply tugging and eating techniques within a short mime story.

  • Model a simple rabbit story: tug a carrot, chew slowly, rub tummy, freeze with a happy face.

  • Invite children to perform the full sequence in small groups, using clear effort, expressive eating, and a tidy finish.

  • Use count cues (e.g., “1-2-3-freeze!”) to guide timing and control.

  • Reinforce posture and stillness during the final statue.

10 min Performance + Feedback

Purpose: To build performance confidence and reinforce technique through observation and feedback.

  • Invite children to perform their rabbit mime sequence one group at a time.

  • Observe tug clarity, chewing expression, and happy finish control.

  • Offer specific feedback: “Your tug looked so strong!” or “I loved your smile after the tummy rub!”

  • Reinforce calm starts and finishes with posture and breath cues.

5 min Calm Close

Purpose: To help children wind down and leave the session feeling calm and proud.

  • Lead a gentle “rabbit rest” exercise: curl into a bunny ball, breathe slowly, and listen to soft music.

  • Invite children to sit or lie down and imagine a rabbit resting in a quiet burrow.

  • Thank children for their effort and preview the next lesson

Extension Ideas:

  • Use pretend food props to inspire mime stories (e.g., carrot = healthy, cake = treat).

  • Practice happy finish statues during transitions (e.g., freeze with a smile before lining up).

  • Reinforce effort mime with a “tug and freeze” game—who can show the clearest pull and happiest finish?
