Learning Objectives:

1. Understand that shadows are formed when light is blocked

2. Identify shapes in shadows

3. Learn about light blocking


Materials Needed:

- Flashlight (1 for teacher, 2-3 for activities)

- White projection screen or blank wall

- Shadow cards:

  • Star shape (3-4 cards)

  • Circle shape (3-4 cards)

  • Heart shape (3-4 cards)

- Card holders or stands

- Collection of objects:

  • Transparent: clear plastic sheets, cellophane

  • Opaque: cardboard shapes, wooden blocks

- Simple shadow puppets (2-3 characters)

- Safety note: All materials should be child-safe, no sharp edges


Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Lead "Hello Song"

• Dim room lights slightly

• Show flashlight beam: create simple shadow

• Point to light and shadow areas

 

5 mins - Discovery Chat

• Display shadow cards one by one

• Create shadows with each card

• Model blocking light with hands

• Invite children to watch shadow changes

 

7 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Light Blocking Game

• Position screen or white wall

• Hold up star shadow card

• Demonstrate how card blocks light

• Create star shadow

• Repeat with circle and heart cards

• Invite children to guess shape before revealing

• Help children hold cards to create shadows

 

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Shadow Matching

Part 1 (6 mins):

• Display transparent and opaque objects

• Create shadow with each object

• Show difference in shadow darkness

• Guide children to observe shadow qualities

 

Part 2 (6 mins):

• Place objects in line

• Create shadows one by one
