K1L17 Magnetic Magic

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes

Learning Objectives:

- Identify magnets by sight and touch

- Understand that magnets can "stick" to some things

- Use simple English words related to magnets (stick, pull)


Materials Needed:

- Large bar magnets (1 per child)

- Picture cards of magnetic items in daily life

- Magnetic fishing set (plastic fish with paper clips, magnetic wands)

- Magnetic building tiles (20-30 pieces)

- Magnetic sensory bottles (filled with baby oil and metal items like paper clips, safely sealed)

- Magnetic wands (4-5)

- Sorting cups (8 sets labeled "Magnetic" and "Not Magnetic")

- Collection of safe items for sorting:

  • Magnetic: paper clips, metal spoons, metal bottle caps

  • Non-magnetic: plastic toys, wooden blocks, rubber balls


Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing "Hello Song"

• Show a large magnet: "This is a magic stick called a magnet!"

 

5 mins - Discovery Chat

• Show pictures of magnets in daily life (on whiteboard, toys, etc.)

• Simple demonstration with common magnetic items

• Introduce vocabulary: magnet, stick, pull

 

5 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Magnet Friends

• Give each child two large, safe magnets

• Guide exploration of attraction/repulsion

• Use simple phrases: "Together! Apart!"

• Play "Magnet Dance" - magnets coming together and apart

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Magnetic Toy Time

• Set up 4 stations:

  - Magnetic fishing game

  - Magnetic building tiles

  - Magnetic sensory bottles

  - Magnetic wands with small safe items

• Rotate groups every 3-4 minutes

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Sort It Out

• Part 1 (7 mins):

  - Teacher demonstrates with various items

  - Children make predictions: "Will it stick?"

  - Use clear vocabulary and gestures

• Part 2 (8 mins):

  - 4 groups with sorting cups

  - Children sort items and check with magnets

  - Teachers supervise and guide

 

2 mins - Wrap-Up

• Review: "Magnets stick to some things!"

• Sing "Goodbye Song"
