Unit 10: Show Preparation

LESSON 2: Performing in Costume & With Props
Age Group: 2-3 years old
Duration: 30 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Drama: Students will be able to sustain character movement, speech, and expression across a full performance with clarity and confidence.  
    Music: Students will be able to coordinate singing with simple movements, maintaining a steady rhythm and joining group song moments throughout the full show.   

  2. Performance Readiness: Students will be able to maintain audience‑facing posture, stay focused during long group sequences, and perform smoothly and independently from start to finish.  

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  1. Full set of props 
  2. Full set of costume 
  3. Floor arrows or entrance markers
  4. Assigned spot markers 
  5. Narrator script 
  6. Percussion instrument (chime or drum)

REMARK: If possible, carry out this lesson on the actual stage or performance space to help children become familiar with entrances, center positions, and exits in the real environment.


LESSON PROCEDURES:
1. Warm-up (3 minutes)

- Invite children to form a circle.  
- Guide gentle stretching to prepare bodies for a long performance.  
- Invite children to sing a short section of the Making Juice Song to warm up their voices.  
 

2. Introduce Today’s Focus: Performing in Costume & With Props (4 minutes)  

- Invite children to gather and listen to the day’s task.  
- Guide children to understand that today’s full show will be performed in costume and with all props.  
- Guide children to notice how costumes may change movement and projection.  
 

3. Full Non‑Stop Show Flow: Scenes 1–7 (20 minutes)

General Teacher Actions Throughout the Full Flow  

- Invite children to put on costumes and check comfort and visibility.  
- Guide children to move to their starting positions with props in hand.  
- Invite the narrator to begin the show.  
- Guide children to follow all entrances, lines, movements, and songs while managing costumes and props.  
- Invite children to adjust speech projection if costume pieces soften their voice.  
- Guide children to move safely, watching for long tails, headpieces, or wings.  
- Invite children to hold props with clear, audience‑facing posture.  
- Guide transitions using silent gestures only, keeping the flow continuous.  
- Invite children to maintain character presence even if a costume shifts or a prop wobbles.  
- Guide music cues to play at the correct moments without interruption. 


Scene‑Specific Teacher Actions (Following Script Order)
- Invite Bear Family to begin Scene 1 with costumes adjusted and props ready.  
- Guide Alligator and Wolf Families to prepare quietly for Scene 2 entrances with apples and watermelons. 
- Invite Ostrich and Monkey Families to enter on cue for Scene 3 with oranges and mangoes.  
- Guide Lion and Panda Families to prepare for Scene 4 with lemons and pineapples.  
- Invite Kangaroo, Pig, and Lizard Families to enter smoothly for Scene 5 with kiwis, pears, and limes.  
- Guide Gorilla Family to prepare for Scene 6 entrance with grapes.  
- Invite all families to enter together for Scene 7’s final celebration, holding props high with strong visual presence.  
- Guide the final songs and freeze pose while ensuring costumes remain safe and comfortable.  



4. Cool Down (2 minutes)

• Invite children to return to circle.  
• Lead soft breathing and gentle stretching.  

 


ASSESSMENT:

- Observe clarity of speech while wearing costumes.  
- Assess safe, comfortable movement in costume.  
- Evaluate coordination of props with entrances and fruit lines.  
- Monitor visual character presence and audience‑facing posture.
