Pacing and Timing

Unit 8: Speaking on Stage  

LESSON 2: Pacing and Timing
Age Group: 2-3 years old
Duration: 30 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Drama: Students will be able to speak at a natural pace, using pauses to support meaning and clarity.  

  2. Music: Students will be able to match their vocal rhythm to the timing of entrances and transitions.

  3. Performance Readiness: Students will be able to follow the correct speaking order.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  1. Floor arrows or entrance markers
  2. Assigned spot markers 
  3. Narrator script 
  4. Percussion instrument (chime or drum)

REMARK: If possible, carry out this lesson on the actual stage or performance space to help children become familiar with entrances, center positions, and exits in the real environment.


LESSON PROCEDURES:
1. Warm-up (3 minutes)

• Invite children to form a circle.
• Sing “Sharing Song” with designed movements.
• Invite children to practise “slow voice / fast voice” contrasts to prepare for tone work.  .  
 

2. Introduce Today’s Focus: Pacing and Timing (4 minutes)

• Invite children to listen to a teacher demonstration of:  
  - speaking too fast  
  - speaking too slow  
  - speaking at a natural pace  
• Guide attention to how pauses help the audience understand the line.  
• Invite children to try short warm‑up lines with different pacing and pauses.  

1. Natural Pace Practice

  • “Hello, everyone.”

  • “I am ready.”

  • “We are here.”

2. Slow vs. Fast Pace Exploration

  • “Walk, walk, walk…” (slow → natural)

  • “Here we come!” (fast → natural)

  • “Into the forest.” (slow → natural)

3. Pausing for Meaning

  • “Hi Bears… we have apples.”

  • “Look… something is coming.”

  • “Hello… I am here.”

4. Speaking Order Warm-Up

  • “I speak first.”

  • “I speak next.”

  • “Now it’s my turn.”

  • “I wait and listen.”

5. Audience Reaction Timing

  • “We have fruit… ta-da!”

  • “Here it is… apples!”

  • “Guess what… oranges!”

 

3.   Practise Introductions With Natural Pacing (8 minutes)

(Using Alligator and Wolf lines from Scene 2)

• Invite Alligator Family to enter slowly on the narrator cue.  
• Guide each child to deliver:  “Hello! I am Alligator ______.”  
• Invite children to:  
  - speak at a natural pace  
  - pause briefly before their name  
  - wait for the previous speaker to finish  
• Repeat with Wolf Family introductions.  
• Guide children to notice the speaking order:  
  Alligator → Alligator → Alligator → Alligator → Fruit line → Bears’ “Thanks!” → Wolf sequence.  


4. Practise Fruit Lines With Pauses and Timing (8 minutes) 

(Using Scene 2 & Scene 3 fruit lines)
Fruit Line Timing Practice

• Invite Alligator Family to deliver:  “Hi Bears! We have apples.”  
• Guide a small pause after “Hi Bears!”  
• Invite Wolf Family to deliver:  “Hi Bears! We have watermelons.”
• Guide children to wait for the Bears’ “Thanks!” before moving.  

Scene 3 Timing Practice

• Invite Ostrich and Monkey Families to practise the same pacing pattern.  
• Guide children to:  
  - pause before saying the fruit  
  - wait for the narrator cue  
  - allow space for audience reaction  
 

5. Mini Scene Run‑Through (5 minutes)

*(Alligator → Wolf → Ostrich → Monkey)*  
• Invite children to follow the full speaking order.  
• Guide natural pacing for each introduction.  
• Reinforce pauses before fruit lines.  
• Guide children to wait calmly during transitions.  
 

6. Cool Down (2 minutes)

• Invite children to return to circle.  
• Lead soft breathing and gentle stretching.  

 


ASSESSMENT:

- Observe natural pacing during introductions.  
- Assess ability to pause before key words.  
- Evaluate understanding of speaking order.  
- Monitor calm waiting and timing during transitions.
