Pacing and Timing

Unit 8: Speaking on Stage  

LESSON 3: Pacing and Timing
Age Group: 2-3 years old
Duration: 30 minutes

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Drama: Students will be able to show emotions through vocal expression and facial cues.  

  2. Music: Students will be able to match vocal delivery to the character’s feelings and intention. 

  3. Performance Readiness: Students will be able to maintain eye contact, face the audience, and use appropriate energy levels to reflect the mood of the moment.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  1. Emotion picture cards (happy, excited, surprised, calm)  
  2. Floor arrows or entrance markers
  3. Assigned spot markers 
  4. Narrator script 
  5. Percussion instrument (chime or drum)

REMARK: If possible, carry out this lesson on the actual stage or performance space to help children become familiar with entrances, center positions, and exits in the real environment.


LESSON PROCEDURES:
1. Warm-up (3 minutes)

• Invite children to form a circle.
• Sing “Sharing Song” with designed movements.
• Guide simple facial warm‑ups (big smile, surprised face, calm face).  
• Invite children to echo short emotional sounds (happy “mmm!”, excited “oh!”, surprised “ah!”).  
 

2. Introduce Today’s Focus: Expression and Emotion (4 minutes)

• Invite children to listen to a teacher demonstration of the same line spoken with different emotions: happy, excited, surprised, calm  
• Guide attention to how the voice and face change together.  
• Invite children to try short warm‑up lines 

1. Happy / Cheerful Tone

  • “I’m so happy to be here.”

  • “Hello, everyone!”

  • “I brought something for you!”

2. Excited / Energetic Tone

  • “Look what I found!”

  • “Wow! This is amazing!”

  • “Let’s make juice together!”

3. Surprised / Curious Tone

  • “Oh! What is this?”

  • “Really? For me?”

  • “I didn’t expect that!”

4. Calm / Gentle Tone

  • “Hello, friends.”

  • “I’m ready to help.”

  • “Let’s start slowly.”

 

3.   Practise Introductions With Facial Expression (8 minutes)

(Using Lion, Panda, Kangaroo, Pig, Lizard, and Gorilla introductions from Scenes 4–6)

• Invite Lion Family to enter on the narrator cue.  
• Guide each child to deliver: “Hello! I am Lion ______.”  
• Invite children to:  
  - match their voice to a confident lion feeling  
  - show expressive faces  
  - maintain eye contact with the audience  
• Repeat with Panda, Kangaroo, Pig, Lizard, and Gorilla Families.  
• Guide children to notice how each animal family might feel differently (proud, excited, friendly).  



4. Practise Fruit Lines With Emotion and Energy (8 minutes) 

(Using Scene 4, 5, and 6 fruit lines)
Emotion Practice for Fruit Lines  
• Invite Lion Family to deliver:  “Hi Bears! We have lemons.”  
• Guide children to try different emotional tones:  
  - cheerful, excited, proud  
• Invite Panda, Kangaroo, Pig, Lizard, and Gorilla Families to practise the same pattern.  

Energy Level Practice 
• Invite children to try the line with:  
  - medium energy (friendly)  
  - high energy (excited)  
  - calm energy (gentle)  
• Guide children to match energy to the moment in the scene.  
 

5. Mini Scene Run‑Through (5 minutes)

*(Lion → Panda → Kangaroo → Pig → Lizard → Gorilla)*  
• Invite children to follow the full speaking order.  
• Guide expressive faces during introductions.  
• Reinforce emotional tone during fruit lines.  
• Guide children to maintain eye contact and audience‑facing posture.  
 

6. Cool Down (2 minutes)

• Invite children to return to circle.  
• Lead soft breathing and gentle stretching.  

 


ASSESSMENT:

- Observe natural pacing during introductions.  
- Assess ability to pause before key words.  
- Evaluate understanding of speaking order.  
- Monitor calm waiting and timing during transitions.
