Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing the "Hello Song"

• Introduce today's topic: "Today we're going to be Plant Scientists!"

5 mins - Discovery Chat

• Show a large, colourful picture of a simple plant with roots, stem, and leaves

• Point to each part and say: "This is the root, this is the stem, these are the leaves"

• Ask children to repeat the words

• Briefly discuss what plants need to grow: "Plants need water, sunlight, and soil. Just like you need food and water to grow big and strong!"

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Plant Parts Puzzle

• Prepare simple puzzles of plants with three pieces (roots, stem, leaves)

• Divide children into small groups

• Give each group a puzzle and ask them to put it together

• As they work, remind them of the names of each part

• Once finished, have groups show their completed puzzles and name the parts

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Plant Needs Charades

• Explain: "Let's pretend to be plants and show what they need!"

• Demonstrate actions:

  - Drinking water: Slurping sound and rubbing tummy

  - Getting sunlight: Arms up, face to the sky, big smile

  - Growing in soil: Wiggle toes and stretch up tall

• Play a game where you call out "Water!", "Sunlight!", or "Soil!", and children do the corresponding action

• Mix it up by calling two or all three at once

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Let's Plant a Seed!

• Show children a bean seed and a small plant in a clear cup

• Briefly explain: "This little seed can grow into a plant like this!"

• Give each child:

  - A clear plastic cup

  - Some soil (or cotton wool if using soil is not feasible)

  - A few bean seeds

  - A small cup of water

• Guide students through the planting process:

  1. "First, let's put some soil (or cotton wool) in our cup"

  2. "Now, make a little hole with your finger"

  3. "Gently place your seed in the hole"

  4. "Cover the seed with a bit more soil (or cotton)"

  5. "Let's give our seed a little drink of water"

• As they work, talk about what the seed needs to grow:

"Remember, our seed needs water, sunlight, and soil to grow"

• Help children label their cups with their names

• Explain: "We'll keep our cups in a sunny spot and water them a little each day. Soon, we'll see our seeds start to grow!"

• Encourage children to make predictions: "What do you think will happen first?"

2 mins - Wrap-Up

• Recap: "Today we learned about plant parts and what plants need to grow. We even started growing our own seeds!"

• Sing the "Goodbye Song"
