Learning Objectives

- Children will understand the concept of light refraction and dispersion through creating a rainbow.

- Children will improve their descriptive vocabulary by explaining their observations.

- Children will develop their cooperation and communication skills during group activities.


Materials Needed:

- Exploration Kit x 5

  • 1 x Exploration Kit 1: Torch, CD, White paper
  • 2 x Exploration Kit 2: Plastic cup, White paper, Water, Torch
  • 2 x Exploration Kit 3: Plastic box, Mirror, White paper, Water, Torch

- Engagement Kit x 5

  • Modelling clay in white or light grey, Pipe cleaners in assorted colours

- Photographs of real rainbows

- Song: I Love Science Song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVXXIBe7Rwk)


Preparation

- Set up tables for children to sit in groups with the required materials.

- Arrange rainbow photographs for an inspiring display.

- Familiarize with the I Love Science Song to share in the children's joy.

- Familiarize with the related subject knowledge to ensure the smooth flow of the demonstration and explorations.


Lesson Procedure

1. **Warm-up Singing (5 minutes)**

   - Fill the room with music and excitement!

   - Play the I Love Science Song and guide our little scientists in song and dance. The I Love Science Song is our anthem for curiosity and joy.

 

2. **Engagement (10 minutes)**

   - Show children the captivating photos of rainbows, and ask them what they feel when they see these wonders.

   - Pair up our young explorers, hand out the clay and pipe cleaners, and watch their imaginations take flight as they create miniature rainbows.

   - Equip each pair with their engagement kit and stroll around, offering each team a helping hand and a word of encouragement.

 

3. **Exploration (15 minutes)**

   - With a sense of wonder, demonstrate the magic of making a rainbow with just a few simple items (torch, white paper, plastic box, water and mirror).

   - Equip each pair with their exploration kit and stroll around, offering each team a helping hand and a word of encouragement.

 

4. **Observation and Discussion (10 minutes)**

   - Get children talking! Ask them to share their discoveries and listen to each other's rainbow tales.

   - Use their observations to weave a story of light and colour they can carry.

 

5. **Tidy Up (5 minutes)**

   - Time to tidy up! Make it fun – who can be the neatest explorer?

   - Reflect on the day's journey with a simple recap of their scientific adventure.

   - Offer heartfelt praise for their efforts and the new knowledge they've gained.

 

6. **Ending (if time allows)**

   - As we close, sing once more. The I Love Science Song is our anthem for curiosity and joy.
