Learning Objectives:

- Recognize that light creates shadows

- Identify basic shapes in shadows

- Develop hand-eye coordination through shadow play


Materials Needed:

- Flashlight (1 for teacher, 2-3 for group activities)

- White projection screen or blank wall

- Simple hand shadow picture guides

- Collection of transparent and opaque objects:

  • Transparent: clear plastic cups, cellophane

  • Opaque: wooden blocks, cardboard shapes

- Shadow cards:

  • Fish head card

  • Fish tail card

- Base for holding shadow cards

- Safety note: All materials should be child-safe, no sharp edges

Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Lead "Hello Song"

• Dim room lights slightly

• Demonstrate flashlight beam on wall

• Point to light beam and shadow areas

 

5 mins - Discovery Chat

• Show hand blocking light beam

• Create simple shadow shapes

• Model key words with actions

• Invite children to wave at their shadows

 

5 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Shadow Hand Play

• Arrange children in semi-circle facing wall

• Demonstrate simple hand shadow (rabbit)

• Show step-by-step hand positions

• Invite children to copy movements

• Create bird shadow next

• Lead children in making shadows move

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Object Exploration

Part 1 (7 mins):

• Display various transparent and opaque objects

• Hold up each object one at a time

• Create shadow with each object

• Invite children to predict if light will pass through

• Show answers and put items in labelled baskets: transparent or opaque

Part 2 (8 mins):

• Divide children into 4 groups

• Guide children to test objects in light beam

• Pass objects around for children to explore

• Ask children to notice differences between shadows

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Fish Shadow Story

Part 1 (7 mins):

• Display complete fish shadow

• Separate cards to show individual parts

• Demonstrate combining parts

• Show how two lights create one fish

 

Part 2 (8 mins):

• Give each child chance to handle cards

• Help position lights correctly

• Support children in aligning cards

• Create simple story about swimming fish

 

2 mins - Wrap-Up

• Lead "Goodbye Shadow" song

• Turn lights back on gradually

- Ensure room is not too dark

- Check all electrical equipment

- Keep pathways clear

- Maintain adult supervision
