K1L9 Lesson Plan: Sounds on the Farm

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes

Grade: K1

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Learning Objectives

1. Children will be able to identify objects that can make noise and those that cannot.

2. Children will be able to match farm animal sounds with their corresponding animals.

3. Children will be able to describe sounds they hear.

Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing the "Hello Song"

• Introduce today's topic: "Today we're going to explore sounds on the farm!"

5 mins - Discovery Chat

• Show a large picture of a farm with various animals and objects

• Ask: "What animals do you see on the farm?"

• Briefly discuss: "Farms have many different sounds. Let's learn about them!"

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Noisy or Quiet?

• Prepare a mix of farm-related objects, some that make noise (e.g., bell, rattle, toy drum) and some that don't (e.g., toy cow, plastic egg, toy tractor)

• Show each object to the children and ask: "Do you think this can make a sound?"

• Demonstrate or let children try making sounds with the objects

• Sort objects into two groups: "Noisy" and "Quiet"

• Play a quick game: "I'm thinking of a noisy object on our farm. Can you guess?"

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Animal Sound Matching

• Prepare pictures of farm animals (e.g., cow, pig, sheep, chicken, duck, horse)

• Play recordings of animal sounds or make the sounds yourself

• Ask children to identify each sound and match it to the correct animal picture

• Practice making the animal sounds together

• Play a game: Children take turns making an animal sound, others guess the animal

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Describing Farm Sounds
• Prepare a variety of farm sound recordings or be ready to make the sounds yourself (e.g., cow mooing, chicken clucking, tractor engine, rooster crowing, sheep bleating)
• Introduce the concepts of loud/quiet and high pitch/low pitch using simple gestures:

  • Loud: spread arms wide; Quiet: bring fingers close together
  • High pitch: reach arms up high; Low pitch: crouch down low
    • Play or make each farm sound and ask children to describe it:
  • "Is this sound loud or quiet?" (Children respond with words and gestures)
  • "Is this sound high or low?" (Children respond with words and gestures)
    • Create a simple chart with pictures of farm animals/objects and columns for "Loud/Quiet" and "High/Low"
    • As you play each sound, help children place a sticker or mark in the appropriate columns
    • Encourage children to imitate the sounds, adjusting their volume and pitch
    • Play a guessing game: Describe a farm sound (e.g., "This animal makes a loud, low sound"), and have children guess the animal

3 mins - Wrap-Up

• Recap: "Today we learned about farm sounds, matched animal noises, and even made our own farm orchestra!"

• Sing the "Goodbye Song"
