Wonder Lab - K2L3 Tummy Journey

K2L3 Tummy Journey

Lesson Duration: 45 minutes

Grade: K2

Preparation Time: 15 minutes

Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives:

• Children will be able to describe the basic steps of digestion.

• Children will be able to act out the journey of food through the digestive system.

• Children will be able to observe and explain a simple digestion experiment.

Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing the "Hello Song"

• Introduce today's topic: "Today we're going on a tummy journey!"

• Show a large picture of the human digestive system

5 mins - Discovery Chat

• Ask: "What happens to food after we eat it?"

• Briefly introduce the main parts of the digestive system: mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines

• Discuss: "How does our body get energy from food?"

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Food Journey Adventure

• Set up an obstacle course representing the digestive system:

  - Hula hoop for the mouth

  - Tunnel for the esophagus

  - Another hula hoop with a stick for the stomach

  - Zigzag taped path for the intestines

  - Final hula hoop for the end of the journey

• Children pretend to be a piece of apple:

  - Jump into the first hula hoop and jump up and down (chewing)

  - Crawl through the tunnel (esophagus)

  - Step into the stomach hula hoop, hold the stick, place forehead on hand and turn 3 rounds (digestion)

  - Walk zigzag along the taped path (intestines)

  - Jump into the final hula hoop (exit)

• Repeat with different children, using different food items

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Team Digestion

• Divide children into groups representing different digestive organs

• Give each group a small piece of clay (pretend cookie)

• Each group acts out their organ's role:

  - Mouth: Break the clay into smaller pieces

  - Esophagus: Pass the clay pieces to the stomach

  - Stomach: Squish and mix the clay

  - Intestines: Roll the clay into smaller balls

• Discuss how each organ helps break down food

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Stomach Model Experiment

• Prepare for each small group:

  - 3 resealable bags labeled "Dry", "Just Right", and "Too Wet"

  - 3 small pieces of bread

  - Small cup of water

• Place a piece of bread in each bag

• For the "Dry" bag, children gently squish the bread without adding water

• For the "Just Right" bag, add a little water (about 1 tablespoon) and then gently squish

• For the "Too Wet" bag, add more water (about 3 tablespoons) and gently squish

• Observe and compare: "Which bread looks most digested?"

• Discuss the results:

  - "Dry" bag: Hard to break down, like when we don't drink enough water

  - "Just Right" bag: Breaks down well, like when we drink the right amount of water

  - "Too Wet" bag: Too mushy, like when we drink too much water with our food

• Conclusion: Explain that we need to drink the right amount of water for healthy digestion

  - Not enough water makes it hard for our body to break down food

  - Too much water isn't good either

  - Drinking the right amount helps our body digest food properly

• Relate to daily life: "Remember to drink water throughout the day, but not too much all at once!"

2 mins - Wrap-Up

• Recap: "Today we learned about how our body digests food!"

• Sing the "Goodbye Song"

PowerPoint Presentation

Slide 1: Title Slide

- Title: "Tummy Journey"

- Subtitle: "Let's explore how our body digests food!"

- Image: Cartoon of a happy stomach

Teacher Script: "Hello, everyone! Today we're going on an exciting journey through our tummies to learn how our body digests food!"

Slide 2: What Happens to Food?

- Question: "What happens to food after we eat it?"

- Image: Simple diagram of food entering mouth

Teacher Script: "Can anyone tell me what happens to our food after we eat it? [Wait for responses] Let's find out together!"

Slide 3: Meet Your Digestive System

- Title: "Parts of Our Digestive System"

- Images: Simple labeled diagram showing mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines

- Brief description of each part's function

Teacher Script: "Our body has special parts to digest food. First, we chew food in our mouth. Then it goes down the esophagus to our stomach. The stomach mixes the food, and then it goes to our intestines. Let's learn more about each part!"

Slide 4: Food Journey Adventure

- Title: "Let's Go on a Food Journey!"

- Instructions:

  1. Jump in the first hula hoop and bounce (chewing in mouth)

  2. Crawl through the tunnel (going down esophagus)

  3. Step in the stomach hula hoop, hold the stick, place forehead on hand, turn 3 times (mixing in stomach)

  4. Walk zigzag on the tape (moving through intestines)

  5. Jump in the last hula hoop (leaving the body)

- Images: Cartoon representations of each stage

Teacher Script: "Now, let's pretend to be a piece of apple going through the digestive system! Who wants to try first? Remember to follow each step carefully!"

Slide 5: Team Digestion Game

- Title: "Team Digestion"

- Instructions:

  1. Divide into groups: Mouth, Esophagus, Stomach, Intestines

  2. Mouth group: Break clay into small pieces

  3. Esophagus group: Pass clay pieces to Stomach

  4. Stomach group: Squish and mix clay

  5. Intestines group: Roll clay into smaller balls

- Images: Cartoon representations of each organ's action

Teacher Script: "Let's work together as a team to digest our pretend cookie! Each group will act as a different part of the digestive system. Remember to be gentle with the clay!"

Slide 6: Stomach Experiment

- Title: "Stomach Model Experiment"

- Instructions:

  1. Take 3 bags labeled "Dry", "Just Right", "Too Wet"

  2. Put a piece of bread in each bag

  3. "Dry" bag: Squish bread without water

  4. "Just Right" bag: Add 1 tablespoon water, then squish

  5. "Too Wet" bag: Add 3 tablespoons water, then squish

- Images: Three bags labeled "Dry", "Just Right", "Too Wet"

Teacher Script: "Now we'll see how water helps our stomach digest food. Follow the instructions carefully, and let's see what happens to our bread!"

Slide 7: Experiment Results

- Title: "What Did We Learn?"

- Bullet points:

  • Dry: Hard to break down

  • Just Right: Breaks down well
