Wonder Lab - K3L12 Eggs – Eggs-cape

K3L12 Eggs – Eggs-cape

Class Duration: 45 minutes

Age: 3 to 6 years old

Class Size: 10 children

Learning Objectives:

Children will be able to:

  1. Understand basic principles of design and engineering by building structures to protect and transport an egg.
  2. Develop problem-solving skills through hands-on activities and challenges.
  3. Enhance fine motor skills through the manipulation of various building materials.
  4. Collaborate and communicate with peers to share ideas and improve their designs.

Material List:

- Boiled eggs (one per group)

- Assorted building materials (Kids K’NEX, rubber bands, paper cups, tape)

- Toy cars (large enough to mount the egg holders onto)

- Large table or smooth floor area

- Measuring tape or ruler

- Protective floor covering (optional)

- Song: I Love Science Song

Lesson Procedure

Introduction (5 mins)
   - Fill the room with music and excitement!
   - Play the I Love Science Song and guide our little scientists in song and dance. The I Love Science Song is our anthem for curiosity and joy.
   - Briefly introduce the theme and objective of the lesson: "Today, we are going to help an egg travel safely across this big table without breaking. First, we will build a special seat for our egg to make sure it is safe and snug."

Part 1: Guided Construction (15 mins)
   - Guide the children in building an egg holder using the provided materials. Demonstrate how to use the materials to create a secure base for the egg.
   - Encourage creativity and provide assistance as needed, ensuring each child manages to construct a stable holder.

Part 2: Challenge (15 mins)
   - Introduce the next task: "Now that our eggs have a safe seat, let's help them travel! We will build a car for our eggs."
   - Show the children how to attach their egg holders to the toy cars using tape or rubber bands.
   - Once the egg cars are ready, allow the children to test their designs by gently pushing the cars across the table or floor. Observe if the egg stays in place and doesn't fall off.

Discussion (5 mins)
   - Get children talking! Ask them to share their product, demonstrate how their egg car works and listen to each other's egg car.
   - Ask questions like, "Whose egg car travelled the farthest? Why do you think some egg cars did better than others?"
   - Encourage children to think about what worked well and what they could change next time.

Closing (5 mins)
   - Time to tidy up! Make it fun – who can be the neatest explorer?
   - Reflect on the day's journey with a simple recap of their scientific adventure.
   - Offer heartfelt praise for their efforts and the new knowledge they've gained.
