  1. Construct a functional wind measurement tool
  2. Measure wind strength using created tools
  3. Interpret collected wind data and draw conclusions

 

Materials Needed:

- Various wind-making tools:
  • Thin straws
  • Thick straws
  • Toilet paper rolls
  • Hair dryer (teacher use only)
  • Electric fan
  • Hand fans
  • Paper|
- Paper cups (10 per group)
- Anemometer materials:
  • Paper cups (5 per child)
  • Wooden dowels
  • Push pins (teacher use only)
  • Markers
  • Construction paper
- Recording charts with pictures
- Safety goggles
- Picture cards showing:
  • Different wind strengths
  • Weather conditions
  • Typhoon effects

- Safety note: All materials child-safe

Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing "Hello Song"
• Show typhoon pictures
• Introduce wind measurement concept

 

7 mins - Discovery Chat  
• Show different wind-making tools
• Discuss wind strength differences
• Demonstrate each tool safely
• Introduce vocabulary: strong, weak, measure, speed
• Make predictions about wind strength

 

12 mins -  Hands-On Challenge 1: Tower Testing

• Part 1 (6 mins):

  - Build paper cup towers
  - Test with different wind tools
  - Record which tools knock down towers
  - Use phrases: "This wind is strong/weak!"

• Part 2 (6 mins):

  - Order tools from weakest to strongest
  - Compare results with classmates
  - Create simple wind strength chart
  - Use phrases: "Stronger than..." "Weaker than..."

 

13 mins -  Hands-On Challenge 2: Anemometer Making

• Part 1 (7 mins):

  - Show completed anemometer
  - Demonstrate how it spins
  - Help children assemble parts
  - Color one cup for counting

• Part 2 (6 mins):

  - Test anemometers
  - Practice counting spins
  - Use phrases: "Count the spins!" "How fast?"

 

15 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Wind Measurement

• Part 1 (6 mins):
  - Set up testing stations
  - Test each wind tool
  - Count anemometer spins
  - Record results with stickers

• Part 2 (6 mins):

  - Compare results
  - Order wind strengths
  - Make simple bar graphs
  - Use phrases: "This makes (number) spins!"

 

3 mins - Wrap-Up

• Review wind strength order
• Share discoveries
• Sing "Goodbye Song"
