- Building materials:
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Straws
  • Clay/playdough for base
  • Tape
  • Scissors (teacher supervised)
- Small toy figures
- Spray bottles with water
- Testing trays
- Paper towels
- Recording sheets with pictures
- Picture cards showing:
  • Different materials
  • Shelter designs
  • Rain protection

- Safety note: All materials child-safe

• Discuss rain protection needs

12 mins -  Hands-On Challenge 1: Material Testing

• Part 1 (7 mins):
  - Demonstrate testing method
  - Feel different materials
  - Make predictions
  - Use phrases: "Will water go through?"

• Part 2 (8 mins):
  - Test each material
  - Spray water carefully
  - Record results
  - Use phrases: "This keeps water out!" "This gets wet!"

 

12 mins -  Hands-On Challenge 2: Shelter Building

• Part 1 (6 mins):
  - Show sample structure
  - Build basic frame
  - Choose best materials
  - Use phrases: "Make it strong!" "Which material?"
• Part 2 (6 mins):
  - Cover structure top
  - Secure materials
  - Place figure inside
  - Use phrases: "Cover carefully!" "Is it covered?"

 

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Rain Testing

  - Review spray bottle use
