Learning Objectives:

  1. - Children will understand the concept of light refraction and dispersion through creating a rainbow.

  2. - Children will improve their descriptive vocabulary by explaining their observations.

  3. - Children will develop their cooperation and communication skills during group activities.


 

Materials Needed:

- Exploration Kit x 5
o    1 x Exploration Kit 1: Torch, CD, White paper
o    2 x Exploration Kit 2: Plastic cup, White paper, Water, Torch
o    2 x Exploration Kit 3: Plastic box, Mirror, White paper, Water, Torch
- Engagement Kit x 5
o    Modelling clay in white or light grey, Pipe cleaners in assorted colours
- Photographs of real rainbows

Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing "Hello Song"
• Show typhoon pictures
• Introduce wind measurement concept
 

10 mins - Engagement
   - Show children the captivating photos of rainbows, and ask them what they feel when they see these wonders.
   - Pair up our young explorers, hand out the clay and pipe cleaners, and watch their imaginations take flight as they create miniature rainbows.
   - Equip each pair with their engagement kit and stroll around, offering each team a helping hand and a word of encouragement.
 

15 mins -  Hands-On Challenge 1: Exploration

   - With a sense of wonder, demonstrate the magic of making a rainbow with just a few simple items (torch, white paper, plastic box, water and mirror).
   - Equip each pair with their exploration kit and stroll around, offering each team a helping hand and a word of encouragement.

 

10 mins - Observation and Discussion

   - Get children talking! Ask them to share their discoveries and listen to each other's rainbow tales.
   - Use their observations to weave a story of light and colour they can carry.

 

5 mins - Wrap-Up

   - Time to tidy up! Make it fun – who can be the neatest explorer?
   - Reflect on the day's journey with a simple recap of their scientific adventure.
   - Offer heartfelt praise for their efforts and the new knowledge they've gained.
