Materials Needed:

Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing the "Hello Song"

• Introduce today's topic: "Today we're going on a space adventure to explore the planets!"

7 mins - Discovery Chat

• Show a large picture of the solar system

• Ask: "What do you see in this picture?"

• Briefly discuss: "We live on Earth, which is one of the planets that move around the Sun."

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Planet Exploration

• Introduce each planet using simple pictures or props

• For each planet, mention its key feature and type:

  - Mercury: small and close to the sun, rocky planet

  - Venus: very hot with thick clouds, rocky planet

  - Earth: blue with water and land, rocky planet

  - Mars: red and rocky, rocky planet

  - Jupiter: biggest planet with a big red spot, gas giant

  - Saturn: has beautiful rings, gas giant

  - Uranus: tilted on its side, ice giant

  - Neptune: blue and very far away, ice giant

• Group the planets:

  - Rocky planets: use small stones to represent

  - Gas giants: use large balloons to represent

  - Ice giants: use blue-tinted cotton balls to represent

• Explain in simple terms:

  - "Rocky planets are hard like stones"

  - "Gas giants are big and made of gas, like big balloons"

  - "Ice giants are cold and have icy materials"

• Play a sorting game: Give each child a planet name or picture, and have them move to the "rocky," "gas," or "ice" area of the room

• Play a quick guessing game: "I'm thinking of a planet that..." (describe a feature and type, let children guess)

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Colorful Planets

• Prepare outlines of planets on paper

• Review the names of the planets

• Show pictures of each planet again, focusing on their colors

• Give children dry pastels and let them color the planet outlines

• As they color, reinforce the names and basic features of each planet

10 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: Solar System Assembly

• Prepare cut-outs of colored planets and a large piece of black paper for each child

• Teach the mnemonic: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles" (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)

• Help children stick the planets on their black paper in the correct order

• As they work, reinforce the names, order, and key features of the planets

3 mins - Wrap-Up

• Recap: "Today we learned about all the planets in our solar system. We colored them and put them in order from the sun!"

• Sing the "Goodbye Song"
