Materials Needed:

- "Three Little Pigs" storybook

- Paper cups (10 per group)

- Toothpicks (20 per child)

- Modeling clay (1 ball per child)

- K'Nex building sets

- Hair dryers (teacher use only)

- Building base plates

- Picture cards showing:

  • Strong/weak structures

  • Wind effects

  • Building designs

- Safety goggles

- Recording sheets with simple pictures

- Timer

 


Lesson Procedure

3 mins - Welcome Time

• Sing "Hello Song"

• Show wind pictures: "What can wind do?"

• Review safety rules

 

7 mins - Discovery Chat

• Read "Three Little Pigs" story

• Discuss different house materials

• Ask: "Why did wolf's breath work?"

• Introduce vocabulary: strong, weak, blow, fall

• Make predictions about buildings

 

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 1: Cup Tower Test

• Part 1 (6 mins):

  - Demonstrate cup stacking techniques

  - Children build paper cup towers

  - Record tower heights

  - Use phrases: "Stack carefully!" "Make it tall!"

• Part 2 (6 mins):

  - Test towers with gentle blowing

  - Count how many blows to fall

  - Record results with stickers

  - Use phrases: "Blow gently!" "Count together!"

 

12 mins - Hands-On Challenge 2: Toothpick Engineering

• Part 1 (6 mins):

  - Show how to connect toothpicks with clay

  - Build simple structures

  - Make predictions about strength

  - Use phrases: "Connect firmly!" "Build strong!"

• Part 2 (6 mins):

  - Test with blowing first

  - Teacher demonstrates hair dryer test

  - Record which structures stood longest

  - Discuss why some stayed up

 

13 mins - Hands-On Challenge 3: K'Nex Challenge

• Part 1 (7 mins):

  - Show sample K'Nex house

  - Guide children in building

  - Create different wall patterns

  - Make predictions

• Part 2 (6 mins):

  - Test houses with hair dryer

  - Compare different designs

  - Record strongest design

  - Use phrases: "This house is strong because..."

 

3 mins - Wrap-Up

• Review what makes buildings strong
