## General Reminder for Teachers:

• If this project is new to you, or if you have limited or no prior experience with the  materials or processes involved, please consider conducting a trial run before teaching  the lesson. Experiment with the art materials and techniques to familiarize yourself  with potential challenges and outcomes.

• After your trial, if you discover the need for additional materials or modifications to  the process, please inform the appropriate school staff or contact the lesson plan  provider to ensure all resources are adequately prepared for a successful class  experience.

## Lesson 5: My Balloon Dog

### Learning Objectives:

By the end of this activity, students should be able to:

1. Identify and use geometric shapes to create a representation of a balloon dog. 2. Apply colour theory by adding highlights and shadows to their artwork. 3. Discuss and decide on a community setting where their balloon dog could be displayed.

### Materials List:

- Oil pastels in various colours

- Coloured paper for background

- White paper for balloon dog

- Glue

- Artist and Masterpiece posters of Jeff Koons' works

- Community Area poster

### Preparation:

Before conducting the Balloon Dog lesson, the teacher should:

1. Pre-cut white paper into shapes needed for the balloon dog construction, including ovals  and triangles, to ensure students can focus on assembly and artistic details. 2. Create a sample balloon dog using the pre-cut shapes, complete with background and  artistic details such as highlights and shadows, to serve as a demonstration model during the  lesson.

3. Verify that all oil pastels, coloured papers, and other art supplies are non-toxic and safe for  children’s use.

### Class Details:

#### Introduction (10 minutes):

1. Engage with Realia: Show a real or toy balloon dog. Ask students to identify the object and  discuss their experiences with balloons.

2. Introduction to Jeff Koons: Introduce Jeff Koons using Artist and Masterpiece posters.  Explain his art style and show images of his balloon sculptures in various community places.

#### Exploration (10 minutes):

3. Discussion on Placement: Discuss where balloon dogs could be placed (parks, museums,  etc.). Ask students to think of a unique place for their balloon dog.

4. Shape Identification: Display the balloon dog again and ask students to identify geometric  shapes used in its construction.

#### Art Creation (25 minutes):

5. Background Creation: Using the Community Area poster as inspiration, students tear and  glue coloured paper to create a background on white paper.

6. Shape Cutting and Assembly:

 - Students count and cut shapes needed for their balloon dog: 10 ovals, 1 triangle for the  nose, and 1 thin oval for the tail.

 - Arrange and glue shapes on the background to form a balloon dog.

7. Adding Artistic Details:

 - Use oil pastels to add a white highlight on the top side of each shape to create the illusion  of light reflecting.

 - Add a coloured shadow on the opposite side to enhance the 3D effect.

#### Conclusion (5 minutes):

8. Sharing: Each child shares their artwork, describing the colour of their balloon dog and the  chosen location in the community.

9. Display: Arrange all artworks on a classroom wall or bulletin board to create a community  art exhibit.

## Assessment:

- Evaluate students’ ability to identify and use shapes in creating their artwork. - Assess students' understanding of light and shadow in adding dimension to their art. - Observe students’ ability to engage in a discussion about art and community spaces.

## Notes for Teachers:

- Ensure that all students are given sufficient guidance in using scissors safely. - Encourage creativity and individual expression, especially when students decide on the  colours and placement of their balloon dogs.

- Keep the pace comfortable to ensure each student completes their art piece without feeling  rushed.
