Tiny Tales Lesson Plan

Lesson 6 My Space Trip

## Course Aim:

The Tiny Tales course encourages toddlers to learn English through immersive story-based  experiences. It nurtures language acquisition, cognitive development, and a passion for  narratives by involving students in interactive tales and related activities.

**Age:** 2 years old

**Class Size:** 3 children

**Class Duration:** 1 hour

## General Reminder for Teachers:

• If this project is new to you, or if you have limited or no prior experience with the  materials or processes involved, please consider conducting a trial run before teaching  the lesson. Experiment with the art materials and techniques to familiarize yourself  with potential challenges and outcomes.

• After your trial, if you discover the need for additional materials or modifications to  the process, please inform the appropriate school staff or contact the lesson plan  provider to ensure all resources are adequately prepared for a successful class  experience.

## Lesson 6: My Space Trip

### Part 2: Space Collage Art Activity

**Learning Objectives:**

By the end of this activity, students should be able to:

1. Mix colours using oil and dry pastels to create different tones.

2. Create a collage that represents the space scene, including planets and a galaxy. 3. Understand and apply the concept of colour tones to enhance artistic expression.

**Materials List:**

- Black paper (one sheet per student for the background)

- Pre-cut white paper circles for planets

- Oil pastels in various colours

- Dry pastels for creating galaxy effects

- Shapes for rockets or spaceships (pre-cut or students can cut their own) - Googly eyes (for alien creations)

- Glue sticks

- Scissors (for teacher use or with close supervision)

### Preparation:

Before the class, the teacher should:

1. Prepare all materials, ensuring each student has access to a sufficient range of oil and dry  pastels, as well as black and white paper.

2. Pre-cut circles from white paper for creating planets.

3. Cut out basic shapes for rockets or spaceships if students will not be cutting their own. 4. Stick up the planets as classroom decoration as a reference for the students.

### Class Details:

1. **Introduction (5 mins)**:

 - Begin the lesson by engaging the students with the story "Back to Earth with a Bump,"  which introduces a young astronaut's journey through space. Use vivid descriptions to capture  the children's imagination about the vastness and mystery of outer space.  - As the story concludes, transition into the art activity by connecting elements from the  story to the art project. For example, mention the planets the astronaut saw, the colours of  the galaxy, and the spaceship used in the adventure.

 - Refer to the classroom decoration and the sample work, explain the different parts they  will create the planets, galaxy, spaceship, and perhaps even aliens with googly eyes.  - Emphasize that they will be using oil and dry pastels to mix colours and create these  celestial elements themselves, bringing their own version of space to life on paper.

2. **Creating Planets (10 mins)**:

 - Distribute the pre-cut circles and oil pastels to the students.

 - Demonstrate how to blend colours using oil pastels to create different colour tones on the  planets.

 - Encourage students to use similar tones for each planet to create a cohesive look.

3. **Galaxy Creation (10 mins)**:

 - Show students how to use dry pastels on black paper to create a starry galaxy effect.  - Guide them in lightly rubbing pastels across the paper, using white or light blue for stars  and darker colours for the space background.

4. **Spaceship Assembly (5 mins)**:

 - Provide pre-cut shapes or guide students to draw to create rockets or spaceships.  - Students can draw details on their spaceships using oil pastels.

5. **Collage Assembly (15 mins)**:

 - Instruct students to arrange and glue their planets and spaceship onto the black paper.  - If appropriate, add googly eyes to turn some celestial objects into 'aliens'.  - Assist students in arranging their pieces to create a balanced composition.

6. **Clean-Up (5 mins)**:

Help the students clean up their areas, organizing the pastels and disposing of any waste  materials.

## Notes for Teachers:

- Encourage students to think creatively about their space scenes, allowing them to place  planets and other elements where they see fit.

- Offer guidance on using pastels, particularly in blending and layering colours. - Ensure that all students are engaged and participating, providing help where needed to those  who might struggle with the art materials.
